HTC Monthly August 2026 Newsletter: HCID Preparedness

Highly Contagious Infectious Diseases (HCIDs) are much more than just the Ebola virus which has been in the news recently.  There are contact HCID the Marburg Virus and Lassa Fever as well as airborne pathogens such as Pneumonic Plague and highly pathogenic Avian Influenzas. These and other emerging pathogens present unique challenges to healthcare systems. While these events are uncommon, they require an immediate, error-free coordinated response to protect patients, staff, and the community. The cornerstone of safe HCID patient care starts with recognition and ensures that healthcare personnel are thoroughly trained and regularly evaluated in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).  It’s not enough that we purchase and store these supplies at our facilities, but we must instill in our frontline professionals a culture of safety.
