Sunburns can turn a fun day outdoors into a miserable experience. Minor sunburns usually manifest as red, painful, and sometimes swollen skin but can progress to deeper, more extensive burns with blisters and more intense through prolonged exposure. Repeated sunburns, particularly during childhood and adolescence, significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life, including melanoma, the deadliest form.
